Welcome to the Family Ties Website. Come on in and visit. We want to take you through what a family goes through when they find out their child has a disability. We will be dealing only with the school system. When a parent finds out their child has a disability they go into shock, disbelief, and hope that the professionals are wrong. Then they will encounter the school system. Now they will hear more about their child's deficits. It is a hard process to go through. It is very confusing. What we want you to do before you step inside is to take on the role of a community member. Become a vested member of society. We will be introducing you to Joey, a 3 year old boy with Autism and his family. Pick a person, grandpa, grandma, babysitter, neighbor, pastor, law maker, advocate for children, observor, aunt, uncle, playmate, and read this website through the eyes of the role you chose. Then when you are done reading our website post any ideas, concerns, questions, comments, thoughts you have regarding Joey, his parents, the educational system, the professionals, what ever you can think of back in the discussion area. Steps At the top of the page/and the bottom are the following: 1) Our goal for you is the Parents introduction of Joey 2) Job descriptions of professionals 3) Assessment process 4) MDT process (explained inside) 5) IEP process (explained inside) 6) Evaluation process 7) Comment back in the discussion area and let us know which community member you are Thank you for participating in our website.... We are giving a very brief glimpse at this system. We are keeping it simple for easier understanding. We wish the system could be as easy as this, but in the real world, many of our children with special needs are not getting their needs met. We, parents, are fighting with all our might to get our children the education they deserve. Welcome to our webpage. Step on in and explore. |
